Outsidepride Clover King – Best Perennial Clover mix

Outsidepride Clover King

We find that the best perennial deer food plot seed is Clover King from Outsidepride. This perennial blend makes a great deer food plot seed as it is ninety percent clover with ten percent alfalfa for extra flavor and palatability. A single planting can last up to five years without re-seeding. That means five years of deer attracting and growing benefits from the effort of just one planting.

This will provide approximately thirty percent protein for the majority of the year for increased antler growth. It’s heat-resistant, disease-resistant, and cold-tolerant to endure changing conditions.

Fun fact: Clover King seeds have been coated with an inoculant for better establishment. Nitrogen fixation is one of the key values found in legumes and can only occur with proper inoculation. Although many strains of Rhizobium may be present in the soil, all are not equally beneficial. With Nitro-Coat each seed is inoculated with the correct Rhizobium strains and coated through a proven process that ensures a very high level of successful inoculation.

Nitro-Coat is naturally water absorbent and helps attract soil moisture to the seed, getting your stand established quickly. This coating process which Outsidepride utilizes, assures that only the top-performing and crop-specific rhizobia will be applied to ensure your clovers reach maximum nodulation, stand establishment, and yield potential. We highly recommend this one!

Types of Food Plot Plants

The types of food plot plants can be separated into three categories. Perennials, Annuals, and biennials. I will explain each type below.

Annuals

Annuals are bright in color and they have a longer blooming season. These plants grow once per planting. They grow much quicker compared to Perennials. They are the best deer food plot seeds for last-minute plantings.

Perennials

Perennials are plants that can live for three or more growing seasons while annuals live for only one season. They are much more vulnerable to weeds. Perennials tend to produce less forage in harsher weather. They are great for bulk production in a short time span but they grow much slower than annuals so they are not a good last-minute option.

Biennials

Biennials are plants that grow for two seasons. They don’t bloom until the second year. They are monocarpic, meaning they flower and bear fruit only once. They live for two years and in the first year, the plant grows and forms a stem, leaves, and roots. In the second year the plant flowers and produces seed, after this, the plant dies.

How to build the best deer food plot

Food Plot Next to Hunting Stand

Location

Not everyone has the acres to make their deer food plots on private land. Some people think that the best deer food plots are the ones on private land but that is certainly not always the case. Hunters who create food plots in the woods will find that these food plots can be very successful as well. We recommend planting food plots in small secluded hideaways so you can control the environment around your treestand or hunting blind.

Attractiveness to deer

You of course want deer to be attracted to your food plot. Adding the right plants is crucial. Plants that typically attract deer include for example red clover, chicory, and orchard grass.

Many states recommend against attracting deer. The reason for this is that there are fears that this practice will attract dangerous predators like mountain lions. Contact your local Department of Fish and Game for information specific to your area about attracting deer.

Palatability and nutrition

You also want to make sure that the plants are palatable to deer. You also want to make sure they get the right nutritious plants that they actually want to eat.

The best deer food plots have high-protein crops, such as soybeans, turnips, corn, peas, alfalfa, kale and which are also attractants that the animals enjoy feeding on. Deer like the nutritious nuts that come from chestnuts and acorns as well.

Ease of growing

Not every plant is as easy to grow. If you are a beginner, start with plants that are easy to grow. We recommend starting with deer plot seeds/mixes that are easy to grow like Hit List’s brassica blend.

Length of time forage is available

You want your food plot to be ready at the right moment, therefore it is wise to plan accordingly. For last-minute seeding, it is better to use annuals for deer plots. They will be ready in time before the season starts if you time it correctly.

Length of time forage is available

Ph Value

Every seed requires the soil to have a certain ph value but generally, most plants prefer a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. So the best deer food plot soil would be 6 pH. You can measure the ph value in the soil with a soil test kit (see recommended accessories). If the soil has low pH you can use lime.

Drought Tolerance

If there are a lot of droughts then it is wise to use seeds like for example chicory, which is known to be more drought-tolerant compared to other similar plants.

ability to grow in poor quality or acidic soils

If you have poorer quality or acidic soil then you want plants that have the ability to grow in those circumstances.

Deer Population and Weather Conditions

Food plot success also depends on the deer population and weather conditions. If your food plot is close to a big herd and there is low competition then they will definitely be attracted and come to your food plot.

Seedbed Preparation and planting

Not every seed should be planted equally. Therefore we recommend reading the instructions provided by mix’s brand. In general, we recommend first doing a proper soil test in the area where you want to create a deer plot. The ideal pH is generally over 6.0.  Once you have done that and bought seeds it is time for planting.

Start with the disk or till the seedbed to loosen the soil. Plant the seeds at the depth specified by the manufacturer. Create a smooth seedbed with a drag or a cultipacker. Now spread the seeds at the rate recommended by the manufacturer. Adjust soil by adding recommended lime.

If weeds/grass competition is heavy, consider using glyphosate herbicide prior to planting. Adjust soil by adding recommended lime. If weeds/grass competition is heavy, consider using glyphosate herbicide prior to planting.

About cool Season Food Plots

Cool-season food plots can be annuals but are often of the perennial variety. This is because the extended root system that is typical for perennials help the plants to survive the colder temperatures. The reason to plant cool-season crops is to continue to provide for the deer throughout the year rather than just as a preparation for the hunting season.

Cost

Food plot mixes are not very costly however the bigger the area you want to cover the more seeds you’ll need and the price becomes more important. For small food plots, we recommend not buying the cheapest seeds/blends. You want high-quality seeds from the best brands for optimal results. For much larger food plots it is reasonable to look at the medium-ranged priced seeds/blends.

Deer Food Plots – FAQs

Q: Do Deer Food Plots actually Work?

Yes, they do work if the right conditions are met.

Q: How to plant seeds?

We recommend reading the instructions provided by the seed or mix manufacturer. In general, we recommend first doing a proper soil test in the area where you want to create a deer plot. Once you have done that and bought seeds it is time for planting. Start with the disk or till the seedbed to loosen the soil.

Now plant the seeds at the depth specified by the manufacturer. Create a smooth seedbed with a drag or a cultipacker. Now spread the seeds at the rate recommended by the manufacturer. Adjust soil by adding recommended lime. If weeds/grass competition is heavy, consider using glyphosate herbicide prior to planting.

Q: How to prep the soil?

Prepping soil is not difficult but should be done properly. First, spray the food plot to kill weeds and grass. Now it would be wise to do a soil test to determine the soil’s composition. A lot of plants will require a 6.5 to 7.0 pH level to grow efficiently. Use an appropriate amount of lime and fertilizer. Use a cultipacker or ride truck tires over the ground to flatten and firm the soil.

Q: What is the appropriate amount of lime and fertilizer?

This varies per plant. Getting a soil test can help provide that information.

Q: When to plant cool-season food plots?

When you use cool-season food plot forage varieties we generally recommend planting them 45-60 days before the first average frost date during fall.

Q: What Ph value should the soil be?

The ideal ph value of soil varies per plant but most plants prefer a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.
